# Winter running base layers and long-sleeve tops

The layer against your skin does most of the work in the cold. It has to move sweat off your skin and hold some warmth when you slow down. One good long sleeve covers most runs from about 30 to 45°F; below that it goes under a jacket or vest.

## How to choose

- Merino holds warmth well when damp and resists odor. Synthetics dry faster, cost less and usually hold up better to frequent washing.
- Brushed or grid-fleece interiors trap more heat for the same thickness. Look for them below about 30°F (−1°C).
- A half-zip lets you dump heat mid-run without stopping.
- Thumbholes keep sleeves over your wrists and close the gap at your gloves.
- Pick a close fit for a base layer and a little more room for a piece you'll wear over one.

### Smartwool Classic All-Season Merino Base Layer 1/4 Zip

$105 list · Men's, Women's · Light · Best overall

The most consistently recommended merino base layer for winter running right now: thin enough to wear alone when it's merely chilly and easy to vent through the zip, but it needs a shell or midlayer once it gets truly cold.

- **Best for:** Runners who want one odor-resistant merino top that works alone in mild cold and as a base layer under a jacket in winter.
- **Not for:** Anyone who needs standalone warmth below freezing or a rugged top that shrugs off abrasion.
- **Downsides:** Little warmth on its own in real cold; OutdoorGearLab raised durability concerns about the thin fabric; Treeline found it less technical than some vented or hybrid rivals

### Smartwool Classic Thermal Merino Base Layer 1/4 Zip

$130 list · Men's · Midweight · Warmest

The warmer sibling of the All-Season: a 250 g/m² all-merino quarter-zip that reviewers rank among the best base layers for serious cold, though it costs more and needs gentler care than synthetics.

- **Best for:** Easy or long runs well below freezing, and runners who run cold and want merino warmth under a shell.
- **Not for:** Hard efforts in mild weather, where heavier wool runs hot, or anyone wanting a tough, low-maintenance top.
- **Downsides:** Delicate wool that needs careful washing; Expensive; Treeline sees it as a cold-weather layer more than a running piece

### REI Co-op Midweight Half-Zip Base Layer Top

$69.95 list · Men's · Midweight · Best budget

The value pick: a soft, fast-drying synthetic half-zip that OutdoorGearLab rates a Best Buy, giving up some warmth compared with wool in exchange for a much lower price.

- **Best for:** Runners on a budget who want one warm, quick-drying half-zip for roughly 25-45°F runs or for layering under a shell.
- **Not for:** Runners who want merino's odor resistance for repeat wears or running-specific extras like reflective trim.
- **Downsides:** Less warm than wool for its weight, per OutdoorGearLab; Reviewer found it harder to layer than some rivals; No odor-control or reflective details listed

### Janji Rover Merino Hoodie

$136 list · Men's, Women's · Midweight · Best midlayer

A warm, stretchy merino-blend hoodie that works as a standalone top on cool days or a midlayer when it's cold; the snug hood is the highlight, but testers found it picks up odor fast when worn next to skin.

- **Best for:** Runners who want a hooded midlayer that can also be the only top on cool fall days.
- **Not for:** Anyone wanting a reflective night-running layer or pure-merino odor resistance for repeat wears.
- **Downsides:** Gets smelly quickly when worn against the skin, per iRunFar; No reflective details listed; Only 37% merino in the blend

### Tracksmith Franklin Fleece

$200 list · Men's, Women's · Midweight

A premium, very breathable running fleece that Treeline chose as its best fleece: cozier and airier than a wind shell in dry cold, but a narrow-use piece that needs a shell over it when it's windy or wet.

- **Best for:** Calm, dry runs from about the mid-20s to 40°F, or as a breathable midlayer under a shell on colder days.
- **Not for:** Windy or wet conditions on its own, or shoppers watching their budget.
- **Downsides:** Expensive at $200; Blocks far less wind than a shell; Some owner reviews call the cut boxy or large
